Yohei Takaoka's Third Straight Shutout Helps Whitecaps Top Earthquakes

Whitecaps Blank Earthquakes To Move Up Standings

Yohei Takaoka made 35 saves for his third straight shutout, leading the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 3-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night.

The 25-year-old Japanese goalkeeper has not allowed a goal in 318 minutes, the longest shutout streak in the Whitecaps' MLS history.

He was named the man of the match for the second time this season after making several key saves, including a diving stop on a close-range shot from Cristian Espinoza in the 58th minute.

Whitecaps Finally Get Production From New Offense

The Whitecaps (4-8-4) have now won two of their last three games and are unbeaten in their last four.

They got goals from Tosaint Ricketts, Ryan Gauld, and Deiber Caicedo.

Ricketts opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a header off a cross from Gauld.

Gauld made it 2-0 in the 35th minute with a left-footed shot from the top of the box.

Caicedo added the insurance goal in the 89th minute with a shot from just outside the box.

Earthquakes Offense Struggles Continue

The Earthquakes (4-8-4) have now lost three of their last four games and have been shut out in their last two.

They managed just two shots on target against the Whitecaps.

San Jose has scored just nine goals in 16 games this season, the fewest in the MLS.

What's Next?

The Whitecaps will host the Seattle Sounders on Wednesday night.

The Earthquakes will host the Vancouver Whitecaps on August 20.
